UCSIA
and the University of Antwerp are pleased to announce the organisation
of a two-day international, multidisciplinary conference on children,
adolescents & ICT.
The conference will focus on national and international research
dealing with social, cultural, economic, legal, psychological
and ethical issues regarding young people’s uses of various
internet applications and mobile telephony.
The following issues on youngsters and ICT will be discussed:
1. A heterogeneous group: gap in access and competences, social
differences, distributive (in-)justice
2. Developmental changes and related needs: identity construction
and social networks, self-disclosure and privacy, sexual exploration,
social normativity, edutainment, games
3. A vulnerable (target) group: electronic marketing, riskful
contacts, harassment, cyberbullying, racism
4. Awareness, protection and empowerment: perception of risks,
parental mediation, educational and awareness raising campaigns
5. Ethical & legal issues: adapting research methods, ethical
concerns, legislation, self- and co-regulation
Invited keynotes will give overviews of problems, progress and
prospects in key areas. Confirmed
keynotes so far are:
- Jos de Haan, professor of ICT, Culture and Knowledge Society
at Erasmus
University Rotterdam and a senior researcher at the Social and
Cultural
Planning Office (SCP) in The Hague.
- Sonia Livingstone, professor of Social Psychology in the Department
of
Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and
Political Science.
- Yves Poullet, professor at the Faculty of Law at the University
of Namur
(FUNDP) and Liège (Ulg) and head of the ‘Centre de
recherches
informatique et droit’ (CRID).
- Peter Smith, professor and head of the Unit for School and Family
Studies,
Department of Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London.
- Patti M Valkenburg, professor in the Amsterdam School of
Communications Research ASCoR and director of CCAM (Center for
research on Children, Adolescents and the Media).
- Seounmi Youn, associate professor in the Department of Marketing
Communication at Emerson College in Boston.
